CISM
Critical Incident Stress Management

Mining Industry
Miners who volunteer on Emergency Response Teams (ERT) at their mine sites are at risk of developing traumatic stress after an incident.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) helps ERT members properly debrief after an incident or near miss has occurred.
CISM helps those who are exposed to trauma by:
-
Walking the members through the debriefing/defusing process to help them process the incident.
-
Normalizing the physical and emotional reactions to the incident.
-
Encouraging and facilitating recovery by means of self resilient habits.
-
Determining the need for further continued care with a mental health professional.

4 Critical Elements to CISM
Early Intervention
-
Builds trust amongst co-workers
-
Faster recovery
-
Less absenteeism
-
Less turnover

Peer Support
CISM was built around peer support because of its capability for early intervention, which makes it effective when used as an internal peer support program.

Structured Debrief
Lessens the impact of a traumatic event by walking co-workers though guided questions/steps to help them digest the event.

72 Hours
CISM guidelines show the importance of a debrief conversation within 72 hours after a critical incident. This is what makes peer support so effective at CISM support.
